100 Mile Relay to be part of Piqua Bicentennial Activities

The Piqua Bicentennial Founders Day weekend celebration, planned for downtown Piqua on Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23 has something for everyone, including the athletically inclined.  On Saturday, June 23 Mainstreet Piqua will be hosting a 100 Mile Relay running race for teams of up to ten runners.  The relay utilizes the beautiful Piqua PATH (Piqua Athletic Trail for your Health) with each leg of the run ranging between 2.3 and 3.5 miles.

There are several different categories in which to sign up including male, female, and mixed teams, an open category for runners under 40 and a master’s category for runners over 40.  There will also be a super ultra category for teams of three or fewer runners, and ultra category for teams of five and under.  High school teams may also participate, students must be entering ninth through twelfth grades or having just graduated.  The 100 Mile Relay Run is expected to draw teams from throughout the region.

To accommodate runners of various fitness levels, and for all teams to finish between 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., teams will choose their own starting time which will be at half-hour intervals starting as early as 4:30 a.m.   At 9:30 p.m. there will be an awards ceremony, door prizes and team dinner.

Runners of each team will run in the rotation they pre-determine and turn in to race officials on Friday evening.  Again, to accommodate various fitness levels teams may choose how they wish to run the relay (For example the team may decide that each runner will run 1 leg (or 2 legs) before handing off to the next runner, or they may decide Runner A will run two legs, Runner B will run one leg, Runner C will run 3 legs, etc.)  Once all runners in the team have run their leg the identical rotation will start over until all 100 miles are run.
