Shawnee Neighborhood Architectural Tour
September 13, 2014 - 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Meet along the 100 block of East Main, just to the left after crossing over the Shawnee Bridge, parking available along the streets. First known as the Village of Huntersville (established in 1838), this community east of the Great Miami River is today called Shawnee (after the Pique village located on the floor plain). The tour will include new information discovered by Americorps intern Rebecca Torsell on various structures in Shawnee. The group will pass small brick workers' cottages that survived the 1913 Flood that are interspersed with large factory owners homes like that belonging to L.C. Cron with its famous attached octagon cottage. The Hilliard family, the area's first European settlers, built their homes on the top of the hill that overlooked the flood plain below. Tickets are available for $5.00 each and may be purchased at the Mainstreet Piqua office at 326 North Main. The tours will be led by Piqua historian Jim Oda. This project is sponsored by the Piqua Tourism Council with additional assistance from Mainstreet Piqua and the Piqua Public Library.
